MIDTERM-DESIGN 7
connected cultural center - miami
florida international university
school of architecture

CONCEPT:  the human exploration of a digital network.
NETWORK:  a system of interwinig lines
the feeling of constant movement and connectivity is my main focus for this project.

OPPORTUNITIES://
the connected cultural center provides the opportunity for experimentation not only with form, circulation, and proggramatic issues, but also with the integration of the digital media in both the design process and the the actual project. there is also an opportunity to "reverse" the design process.  instead of designing from 2d to 3d, one can maximize the use of computer technology and design from 3-dimensions and then generate a 2-dimentional plan.  circulation also becomes a very important element in this project and my proposal attempts to make it a very dominating feature.  in fact, the circulation is the exposition (or at least will be by the end of the term).

very first concept models

the site provides the system by way of a series of overlapping grids created by the edge conditions.

circulational studies

circulation is very important in my project.  thus, what i am attempting to communicate is the distrubution of people to different areas of the project by means of a main circulatory path which "splits" off into other  secondary paths.  this, of course, is very similar to the way that the internet works.  through the use of technology, the circulation will also serve as a very important means of communication in my project.  my ultimate goal is to challenge the boundries of "traditional architecture" and the senses of those who will use the temporary building by providing a transition between the physical world and the virtural world rather than just a simple ramp.

programatic studies-within context

experimentation with inflatable architecture

here the forms begin to change and take on a more organic shape as i take into consideration the possibilities of an architecture which is supported with air.

the challenge of structure and materiality

one of the most interesting aspects of this project is the fact that is is meant to be a temporary structure to be used for only five years.  this can be particularly challenging for the architect considering that architecture is usually meant (and seen by people) to be permanent in nature, or at least long lasting.  the question of materiality now comes to mind.  i plan on taking advantage of this unusual issue to explore the use of diferent materials and their impact on the way that architecture is built and the way that it is percieved.
